The Auspicious Celebration of Guru Purnima
The Celebration of Guru Purnima is nearly upon us, July 3 2023. It is an auspicious time to connect with the energy of the Guru - The remover of darkness. "A guru is someone who is filled with devotion or love for the Highest cause—love and compassion for all living beings—and who has dedicated his or her life to helping everyone find the true purpose of life." Early in human existence, during the Satya Yuga (The Garden of Eden), there was no need for a Guru. All lived in the truth and understanding of the God Consciousness. Now, during this time, when the illusions and negativity blind us from our divine nature, the guru - the Guru Parampara - is our bridge to help guide us to the truth of our divine nature and remove the veil blinding us from the knowledge of our true selves. During Guru Purnima, we celebrate the Guru Parampara, the lineage of teachers and enlightened masters who provide us the knowledge and tools for our collective awakening. The Guru Parampara provides us the security that we are not alone on this journey and reminds us that awakening is truly a collective experience.
Your first gurus are your parents and, likewise, you are the first guru to your children. A mother can bring knowledge and light, to the child while still in the womb and there is no healer more powerful to you than your own mother and you to your child. As your parents were the channel for your soul into this world from the unmanifest to the manifest, they are also your link back. The second of the Ten Commandments is "Honor thy Father and Mother" and it is because of this link that it is integral to spiritual teachings across all traditions. All religions are one. In the Vedic tradition, it is customary to offer thanks to your Mother and Father just as you fall asleep and first thing when you wake. Regardless of your relationship with your parents, they are your soulmates and directly linked to your spiritual path.
Begin to honor your parents as your first teachers, your first gurus. Initiate the practice of offering thanks to them as you fall asleep. Always say prayers for your parents. If needed, forgive your parents.
The Guru Principle is greatly misunderstood in the West and yet, in Christianity, we have the most powerful example of the guru, the Sadguru, the ultimate guru, The Truth. That truth is Jesus Christ. He is the light, the truth, the way. Chapter 14 from John reveals that he is the Father, He is Shiva, He is Brahma, He is Vishnu - the supreme reality. When you look upon Jesus you are looking upon God and yet in the same verse, he tells us that we too will perform even greater works. He shares with us the reality of the Christ Consciousness within each of us and that it is not unique to him and only him, but it is our divine potential as dictated by God, the Father.
From the Book of John, Chapter 14
Jesus said: I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father too. From this moment you know him and have seen him. Philip said, 'Lord, show us the Father and then we shall be satisfied.' Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? 'Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father, so how can you say, "Show us the Father"? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? What I say to you I do not speak of my own accord: it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his works. You must believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe it on the evidence of these works. In all truth I tell you, whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, and will perform even greater works, because I am going to the Father.
